    • Introducing the 2012 MileagePlus program
    • Posted Dec 09, 2011 at 6:00 AM

    • All of the 2012 MileagePlus® features and benefits took effect on the day the United MileagePlus and Continental OnePass® technology systems were converted to a single system, unless otherwise noted. This transition occurred on March 3, 2012. Prior to that date, the MileagePlus and OnePass programs continued to operate separately, and elite members continued to enjoy all their usual elite benefits.

      MileagePlus Premier levels and qualification

The 2012 MileagePlus Premier® program has four status levels. Global ServicesSM will continue as an exclusive, invitation-only program for United's top customers.

      How to earn
      Premier 1K®
100,000 Premier qualifying miles (PQM) or 120 Premier qualifying segments (PQS)
      Premier Platinum
      75,000 PQM or 90 PQS
      Premier Gold
      50,000 PQM or 60 PQS
      Premier Silver
      25,000 PQM or 30 PQ

Members' 2011 qualifying activity in both MileagePlus and OnePass were combined toward qualification for the 2012 Premier program, as well as invitations for Global Services. On January 1, 2012, members started earning toward these status levels for 2013.

Also beginning January 1, 2012, to qualify for any Premier level, members must fly at least four paid flights on the new United (including Continental), Copa Airlines or Copa Airlines Colombia during a calendar year. Members who hold a Chase-issued OnePass Presidential PlusSM Credit Card are exempt from this minimum flight criteria as long as their card account is in good standing at the time of qualification.

OnePass Infinite Elite members will have lifetime Premier 1K status

The OnePass Platinum Elite status for OnePass Infinite Elite members was extended until the new MileagePlus status levels became effective on March 3, 2012. At that point, they were granted lifetime status at the Premier 1K level. Infinite Elite ended with the termination of the OnePass program on December 31, 2011.

Long-term loyalty rewarded with lifetime benefits

Starting January 1, 2012, paid flight miles on United, Continental and Copa Airlines count toward Million Miler status. As members progress through each million-mile threshold, they earn successively higher lifetime Premier status for themselves and the ability to nominate a spouse or significant other to the same Premier status on an annual basis.

Because MileagePlus and OnePass each use different methods for earning lifetime status, we are using a one-time mileage calculation to bring MileagePlus members into their new Million Miler program status levels. Then, for members with accounts in both programs, we combine the MileagePlus and OnePass lifetime miles balances to arrive at a new balance, which is carried forward.

      New Global Entry benefit

Beginning late in the second quarter of 2012, MileagePlus will compensate Global Services, Premier 1K and Premier Platinum members for their Global Entry application. Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. Later this year we'll provide details about how the compensation process will work.

The Global Entry compensation benefit applies to new applications only and has a maximum value of $100 USD every five years. Members with an existing Global Entry membership can take advantage of this benefit during their next renewal. The Global Entry program is currently available to U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents, citizens of Canada who are enrolled in NEXUS, citizens of Mexico who hold a valid U.S. visa and citizens of the Netherlands who are enrolled in Privium.

For detailed information on the Global Entry program, please visit the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website at www.globalentry.gov.

Additional travel benefit with the MileagePlus Explorer Card

As of early 2012, Premier members who hold the MileagePlus Explorer Card are eligible for Complimentary Premier Upgrades when flying on eligible economy-class award tickets on United.

Upgrade reward tickets with an eligible credit card

As of early 2012, MileagePlus Premier members who hold an eligible OnePass Credit Card (OnePass Plus, World MasterCard for Business, Presidential Plus, Presidential Plus World MasterCard for Business) or the MileagePlus Explorer Card are eligible for Complimentary Premier Upgrades when flying on eligible economy-class award tickets on United.

Understanding the MileagePlus mileage expiration policy

We want our members to enjoy and be engaged in the MileagePlus program, so we've made it easy to keep miles active. As long as a member earns or uses any MileagePlus award miles at least once every 18 months, none of the miles will ever expire. And there are hundreds of ways to earn or use award miles, such as flying United or any partner airline, staying at any of the many partner hotels, using miles to buy flowers or a magazine subscription, shopping online through one of our numerous MileagePlus partners or donating award miles to a charity. In addition, if a member holds an eligible Chase-issued MileagePlus or OnePass Credit Card, their award miles will never expire, as long as their card account is in good standing.

The MileagePlus policy will go into effect on April 1, 2012, for current OnePass accounts, which means the earliest their award miles could expire is September 30, 2013.

An update for United Standard Awards

Beginning on March 3, all MileagePlus Premier members have unrestricted access to United Standard Awards. If there's a United seat for sale, these members can get it with award miles, guaranteed, even if it's the last seat on the airplane.

This benefit is also available to members who hold an eligible OnePass Credit Card (OnePass Plus, Presidential PlusSM, Visa Signature or Business Credit Card) or an eligible MileagePlus Credit Card (MileagePlus Explorer, Select, Access, Club, Visa Signature or Business Credit Card).

Members without Premier status or without the Explorer card are still able to book Standard Award seats with miles; however, there may be slightly fewer seats available.
