If you’re a United MileagePlus member, please note that as of March 3, you can make new waitlist requests for MileagePlus Upgrade Awards, Regional Premier® Upgrades and Global Premier Upgrades only until 24 hours from departure. Within 24 hours, you can request these upgrades only through united.com or through United Reservations, and only if upgrade seats are available.
For Mileage Upgrade Awards that require a co-pay, the fee is collected when you request the upgrade. If you are not successfully upgraded, the co-pay is refunded and your miles credited back to you for no fee.
Note: If you’re currently a MileagePlus member, this represents a change as you used to be charged the co-pay at the time of upgrade clearance.
Instant upgrades for Premier members with Y and B fares
On select flights, Premier® members traveling on full-fare economy Y and B fares, as well as Premier 1K® members traveling on M fares, are eligible for instant upgrades as early as time of ticketing. If you were a OnePass member, you may already be familiar with these upgrades, but they are new for some MileagePlus members.
As of March 3, a companion traveling on the same reservation as any Premier member — including Premier Silver — is eligible for Complimentary Premier Upgrades, on select United-operated flights. The companion may be confirmed as early as the Premier member’s confirmation window, and will maintain the same priority as the Premier member, even on the day of departure.
Note: If the companion’s Complimentary Premier Upgrade confirms before check-in, the Premier member and the companion will remain on the same reservation. If the companion’s upgrade has not been confirmed by time of check-in, the reservation will need to be split in order to process the upgrade. However, the companion will remain on the upgrade list throughout the remaining flights on the itinerary.
