Today, we became the first U.S. airline to offer customers the ability to scan their passports to check-in for international flights via their iOS and Android mobile devices with the beta launch of passport scanning functionality on our United app.
for international flights on their mobile devices within 24 hours of departure now have the convenient option of either verifying their existing stored passport data or scanning their passport. The app uses the mobile device’s camera feature to capture travelers’ passports, similar to a mobile banking deposit. Jumio, a credentials
management service, will then verify the passport information for additional security. Once the verification process is complete, customers may obtain a boarding pass. Customers requiring additional travel documentation, such as visas, will continue to check-in at the airport.
“We are focused on building the most useful travel app for our customers,” said Mark Nasr, our managing director of eCommerce. “The new passport scanning feature saves valuable time and provides customers with more options to control their travel experience.”
This update also includes the ability to see what time boarding ends on your ticketed flight, so you can grab a snack or a magazine and still be at the gate on time.
Last year, we launched our all-new mobile app, and since then more than 13 million customers have downloaded it. Later this year, we will begin to introduce our all-new united.com website, providing customers a simplified, clearer and faster user experience.
In 2007, we became the first U.S. airline to introduce mobile boarding passes, and we are the first U.S. carrier to offer mobile boarding at all 214 domestic airports we serve. We currently offer mobile boarding at 54 international airports, more than any other U.S.-based carrier.
• The camera on your device will be accessed, similar to how many mobile banking deposits function. The scanned passport information will be verified by a third party for additional security and to help prevent fraudulent activity.
• MileagePlus members who have previously scanned their passport at a kiosk will be asked to verify their stored passport data and will not need to scan their passport unless they need to update the information or add a new passport. Scanned passports will be saved to their MileagePlus profile (maximum two passports issued by different countries).
• Customers with international itineraries must travel with their passport and any other required travel documents.
As we continue our investment in our digital channels we are focused on providing technologies that offer choice, control and convenience to our customers and coworkers. This passport scanning feature will continue to be tested and enhanced after this release based on customer feedback.
To provide feedback once you've downloaded the app, please use the “app feedback” located in the menu options.
