As part of our Eco-SkiesSM commitment, we’re excited to introduce our new, eco-friendly hot beverage cups in United Clubs this month and onboard starting in March. Additionally, we’re improving our recycling procedures to simplify the process, generate increased recycling and minimize waste.
The insulated InCycle® cup is made from at least 50% recycled materials and the fact that it’s insulated eliminates the need for a sleeve, further reducing waste. Four InCycle cups can be made from a single recycled water bottle in a waterless, additive-free recycling process. The new cups are fully recyclable and replace the polystyrene cups currently in use.
“At United, we are constantly working to improve the sustainability of our products and reduce our waste at the same time,” said Angela Foster-Rice, our managing director of global environmental affairs and sustainability. “This new cup is not only aligned with our overall Eco-Skies commitment to the environment, it is another way our customers can feel good about flying with us.”
We’re also improving our recycling efforts by streamlining the process for flight attendants and reviewing policies on the ground. Over the past six years, we’ve recycled 23.5 million pounds of aluminum cans, paper and plastic from waste generated on board aircraft and throughout our operations.
Last year, we reduced our CO2 emissions by more than 811,643 metric tons and exceeded our goal of reducing fuel consumption by 85 million gallons by 10 million.
