    • As a United customer, you’re used to searching for flights, booking tickets, selecting your seats and taking care of other travel-related tasks on the united.com website.

In December 2011, we announced here on the Hub that United Airlines and Continental Airlines will transition to a single reservations system and that we’ve chosen continental.com as the future United travel website, beginning late in the first quarter of 2012.

Laptop with screen showing United websiteAt that time, the Continental website that you see today will have the Web address www.united.com, and you’ll use that website to book and manage your travel.

You can start preparing now for our upcoming move to the look and feel of the continental.com website by familiarizing yourself with key components of Continental’s home page. This way, you can avoid surprises when you go to book your travel after we make the website transition.

Here are basic steps for taking care of some of the primary travel-management tasks:
      • Booking your flight
      • Booking award tickets
      • Managing your reservation
      • Checking in and printing your boarding pass
      • Checking the status of your flight
      • Logging in to your MileagePlus account
      • Searching for information

      Booking a flight
You’ve got plans to travel. You have an idea of your destination and dates. You’re ready to search for flights. Here are two ways to get started.

Reservations tab and Flight tab on united.com
      1. If you prefer to use the website’s main navigation bar — the dark-blue horizontal bar with tabs labeled in white — hover your mouse over the Reservations tab. This activates a drop-down menu, with different options that you can select. To book a flight, select Make Flight Reservation

Optionally, instead of hovering your mouse, you can select the Reservations tab directly to access the Reservations page. On that page, to book a flight, select Flight search.

      2. As an alternative, on the left side of the home page, select the Flight tab in the trip search box, enter your flight details including origin and destination, travel dates, and one-way or round trip, and then select Search.

      Booking award tickets
Let’s say you want to book award tickets using your MileagePlus miles.

      1. You can choose to book award travel using the main navigation bar. Just hover your mouse over the MileagePlus tab and select Book with Award Miles from the drop-down menu. This opens the Award Flight Search page.

      2. As an alternative, you can select the Flight tab in the booking tool on the left side of the home page and enter your flight options in the fields as usual. Then, be sure to select the Award Travel radio button at the bottom of the column before you select Search. This opens the Select Departing Flight page.

Use Award Miles on united.com home page

Tip: You’re not limited to using your award miles only for flights. To view the many ways to redeem miles, hover your mouse over the MileagePlus tab of the main navigation bar and select Use Award Miles to open the Use Miles page.

Managing your reservation and logging in to your MileagePlus account
If you already have a reservation and you want to view the details or make changes, there are a few options. Do you prefer the main navigation bar for getting around our website?

You have two options for managing your reservation:

      1. Hover your mouse over the Reservations tab of the main navigation bar. This activates a drop-down menu, with different options that you can select. To manage your reservation, select Change/View Existing Reservations. The Manage Reservations page opens.

      2. Select the Reservations tab of the main navigation bar directly to access the Reservations page. To manage your reservation, in the Helpful Options section of the page, select Change/View Existing Reservations. The Manage Reservations page opens.

      3. At the center of the home page, in the lower blue panel named Change or View Reservations, type your flight confirmation number and your last name, and then select Go. (As an option, you can select the See More arrow.) The Manage Reservations page opens.

      If you’re a MileagePlus member:

      4. You can sign in from the global utility bar at the top-right corner of the home page, to the left of Ask Alex.

      5. You can also log in to your account in the yellow panel on the right side of the home page, where you currently see OnePass Sign In. (This will change to MileagePlus Sign In when the website becomes united.com in March.) We will cover the login process in depth in a forthcoming article.

Checking in for your flight and printing your boarding pass
Once you’ve booked your flight, here are your options for checking in for your flight using the main navigation bar:

      1. Select the Reservations tab directly to access the Flight Check-in page.

      2. Hover your mouse over the Reservations tab, and then select Check-in for Flight in the drop-down menu. The Flight Check-in page opens where you can proceed with check-in.

      3. On the Print Boarding Pass tab in the center panel of the home page, type your flight confirmation number or your MileagePlus account number into the text box, and then select Go. The Flight Check-in page opens.

Tip: Another way to access the Flight Check-in page from the Print Boarding Pass tab in the center pane of the home page is to select More Check-in options.

Checking the status of your flight and searching for general information
Here are the options for checking your flight status and searching for information on the upcoming united.com:

Using the main navigation bar in two different ways:

      1. Simply select the Travel Information tab to go directly to the Travel Information page, where you can enter your flight information and check the status of the flight.
      2. Hover your mouse over the Travel Information tab on the main navigation bar, and in the drop-down menu select Flight Status & Information.

      3. Select the Check Flight Status tab in the center pane of the home page, enter the information that you have available, and then select Go. The Flight Status & Information page opens. Enter your flight information to check the status of your flight.

      4. If you’re looking for information on united.com come March, instead of looking for a site search box, use Ask Alex, the “virtual expert” search tool (not a live agent) located at the top-right corner of the home page. She is available 24 hours a day.
      Ask Alex search window
      5. When you select the Ask Alex image, a window opens and you’ll see (and hear if you have the sound turned up on your computer) a greeting and an invitation to type a question, phrase or words.
      Alex can help you with:
      • Searching for flights, hotels and car rentals
      • Learning about our loyalty program
      • Reading current policies and procedures
      • Managing travel plans
      • And more

After you have entered text, select the Ask Alex button. With your typed input as a guide, Alex responds in both written and spoken format, with the answer appearing in the window. The relevant Web page automatically opens in your browser and at the bottom of the Ask Alex window, you see additional links that help you complete your task or get more information.
