We already offer more transcontinental flights than any other airline, giving you more options for travel between the east and west coasts. And now we're making changes to concentrate that service at our New York/Newark hub, where we'll also convert all of our existing transcontinental service (to and from Los Angeles and San Francisco) to p.s.® premium service.

Effective October 25, we're moving our p.s. service – our New York-Los Angeles and New York-San Francisco premium transcontinental service – from New York JFK to Newark Liberty International Airport. This will provide significant benefits for our p.s. customers, allowing us to offer better connections, updated facilities and an overall higher-quality experience.

The addition of our p.s. flights at Newark will provide nearly hourly transcontinental service to both Los Angeles and San Francisco, so customers will have a better selection of flights. Operating this service out of our largest East Coast hub will also allow for much easier connections, including connecting to our newly upgraded wide-body service to Berlin, Hamburg, Madrid and Barcelona.

We have extensive work underway to improve the airport experience in the hubs that serve our p.s. routes. In Newark, we've started working with OTG Management on a complete revamp of Terminal C, with high-end restaurants offering menus designed by celebrity chefs, and redesigned gate areas with iPads available for placing food orders and managing your travel. In Los Angeles, this past May we broke ground on a multi-year terminal improvement project that will create a brighter, more open space for United customers. And in San Francisco, we opened the ultra-modern Boarding Area E in 2014.

Our p.s. flights use recently renovated aircraft with modern interiors, offering flat-bed seats and premium inflight service in United BusinessFirst®, along with inflight Wi-Fi, seatback on-demand entertainment and power ports for customers in both BusinessFirst and United Economy®. With this move, all of our flights between Newark and Los Angeles and between Newark and San Francisco will offer flat-bed seats in BusinessFirst®.

Upgrade policies for p.s. flights will stay the same with the move to Newark. MileagePlus® Premier® members can still use Regional Premier Upgrades and Global Premier Upgrades on these routes, but Complimentary Premier Upgrades are not available. In addition, p.s. flights remain eligible for MileagePlus Upgrade Awards. Consistent with the current p.s. policy, the MileagePlus Upgrade Award co-pay will not be waived for Premier members on these flights. These policies will apply only to service between Newark and Los Angeles and San Francisco. Other transcontinental routes out of Newark are not affected and will still be eligible for Complimentary Premier Upgrades and the MileagePlus Upgrade Award co-pay waiver.

If you are already booked on a p.s. flight departing after October 25, we will be rebooking you on one of our Newark-based p.s. flights. This change will happen the weekend of June 19. Once the change is processed, if the schedule or route doesn't work for you, please contact us for other options.
