United Airlines Unveils World's Largest and Industry-Leading Flight Training Center

October 09, 2018

DENVER, Oct. 9, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, United Airlines unveiled its state-of-the-art flight training center in Denver, Colorado. The single-site training center is the largest in the world and home to the company's more than 30 full flight simulators representing all of United's fleet types.

The flight training center is visited by United's more than 12,000 pilots at least once a year for new and recurrent training and is also the largest single-site training facility for other airline pilots. More than two dozen other airlines and government agencies send their personnel to train at the industry-leading facility. In addition to pilot training, the facility hosts flight attendants and maintenance technicians for emergency training and other activities.

"This state-of-the-art flight training center symbolizes the investments we're making in our people and our company, both in Denver and throughout our network," said Oscar Munoz, CEO of United Airlines. "In addition to providing industry-leading training for our pilots, flight attendants and other vital work groups, this facility will become a thriving center where we foster the professional culture, commitment to safety and dedication to customer service that's at the heart of the United success story we are seeing take shape."

United has been training pilots in Denver since 1943. The current campus first opened in 1968 with four buildings, expanded in 1992 with a fifth building and expanded again in 1997 with the addition of a sixth building. In 2015, the company made the decision to consolidate its flight training centers in Denver, kicking off the renovation and nearly doubling the number of flight simulators at the facility. United recently broke ground on a seventh building, which will bring the campus to nearly 540,000 square feet including eight more full flight simulator bays.

United in Denver

United is Denver's largest airline offering more flights and more seats from the Mile High City to more destinations around the world than any other carrier. United operates more than 450 daily flights to over 150 airports worldwide from Denver. United will launch 12 new markets in Denver by the end of 2018 and is planning additional new markets for 2019. United has a storied history in Denver, serving the community for more than 80 years, and benefits from a great partnership with local leaders at the city and state levels, including Governor John Hickenlooper and Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock, who understand the importance of a thriving aviation sector. The company has a commitment to giving back to the community where many of its customers and employees live and work. United supports local organizations like Girls Inc., Mile High Youth Corps, Wings Over the Rockies and the Denver Public Schools Foundation and, earlier this year, announced a $1 million grant to local Denver nonprofit Warren Village.

United Airlines Becomes First Carrier to Receive Audubon International's Green Hospitality Award

June 12, 2018

LOS ANGELES, June 12, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines reached yet another milestone in its role as the world's most environmentally conscious airline by becoming the first carrier to achieve certification through the new Audubon International Green Hospitality Program for the airline's United Club location in Terminal 7 of Los Angeles International Airport. Audubon International awarded United its gold-level certification in recognition of the airport lounge's exemplary indoor air quality, innovative composting program and overall dedication to environmental stewardship.

United and Audubon International, the not-for-profit environmental education organization dedicated to sustainable natural resource management, will continue to work together to further improve the sustainability of the airline's airport lounges around the globe, including its new United Polaris lounge locations at several major U.S. hubs. United has already achieved separate "Green Business" certifications for United Club locations from the cities of Los Angeles, Denver and San Diego.

United's achievement at Los Angeles International Airport follows the airline's historic launch of service in 2016 using commercial-scale volumes of sustainable aviation fuel at the Los Angeles hub for regularly scheduled departures.

"As an industry-leading airline in green initiatives, we are constantly pursuing ways to reduce our footprint, whether through our use of low-carbon, sustainable aviation biofuel or our revaluation of onboard materials that resulted in keeping 30,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide out of the air each year," said Gavin Molloy, United's vice president of corporate real estate and environmental affairs. "Teaming up with Audubon International enables us to further reduce our impact on the environment not just in the air but also at our facilities across our system."

"We're very happy to welcome United Airlines into our Green Hospitality program," said Christine Kane, Audubon International's chief executive officer. "United's focus on minimizing the environmental impact of its operation aligns perfectly with our mission to foster the sustainable use of natural resources in all the places people live, work and play. This partnership is a great example of how working together to improve individual aspects of one's daily life or business operation will result in a larger, and more positive, cumulative impact."

"At Los Angeles International Airport, being at the forefront of environmental sustainability is a top priority not only for our airport, but for our airline partners as well," said Samantha Bricker, Los Angeles World Airports' deputy executive director for environmental programs. "We are pleased that United chose this Los Angeles United Club lounge to be the first to achieve certification through the new Audubon International Green Hospitality Program and we look forward to continuing to work with United on environmental stewardship efforts."

Last year, United teamed up with Audubon International to protect raptors – including hawks, kestrels and owls – in and around New York-area airports and resettle the birds of prey at suitable golf course habitats where the species are more likely to thrive. The Raptor Relocation Program helps minimize risk to wildlife, reduce damage to aircraft and enable the airline to operate more efficiently within some of the world's busiest airspace.

United's award-winning Eco-Skies program represents the company's commitment to the environment and the actions taken every day to create a sustainable future. In 2017, Air Transport World (ATW) magazine named United the Eco-Airline of the Year for the second time since the airline launched the Eco-Skies program. This year, United Airlines ranked No. 1 among global carriers in Newsweek's Global 500 Green Rankings, one of the most recognized environmental performance assessments of the world's largest publicly traded companies.

Most recently, Earnest has been a political analyst for NBC News and MSNBC, making appearances on the network's leading news programs including the Today Show, Meet the Press and NBC Nightly News. Prior to that, Earnest served for eight years in the Obama White House, first as deputy press secretary before being promoted to White House Press Secretary in 2014. In 2015, Earnest was voted the "best White House press secretary I've worked with" by White House correspondents surveyed by Politico.

In addition to his work in front of the cameras, Earnest played a leading role behind the scenes to develop and implement an innovative communications strategy that was paired with a fully-integrated digital media presence to drive the Administration's agenda.

His two-decade career in politics has taken him from Capitol Hill to some of the largest states and most competitive races in the country, including four presidential campaigns, statewide races in Texas and Florida and Mike Bloomberg's first campaign for Mayor of New York.

Earnest received his degree in political science and policy studies from Rice University. He will move to Chicago this summer with his wife, Natalie and their two children. Earnest's first day at United will be Monday, May 21.

United Airlines Announces Collaboration with American Humane for Safe Animal Travel

May 01, 2018

CHICAGO, May 1, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines today announced it will be working with American Humane, the country's first national humane animal organization, to improve the well-being of all pets that travel on United. American Humane has been working to improve the safety, welfare and well-being of the world's animals for more than 140 years.

United also announced that it will resume operations for PetSafe®, the carrier's program for cats and dogs that travel in the cargo compartment, later this summer. The airline continues to review all pet handling processes and policies, including in-cabin pet travel. United is identifying new policies, updating training and customer requirements, and implementing these changes to improve the safety of the pet travel experience. For customers looking for more up-to-date information and important tips to help them further ensure the comfort of their pets during travel, please visit www.united.com/petsafe.

"American Humane has long been known and respected for setting the gold standard of animal welfare," said Jan Krems, United's vice president of cargo. "We look forward to a long-term collaboration and appreciate their expertise in helping us further improve our service on an ongoing and continual basis. As we continue our review process to ensure that we are always doing what's right, we are committed to making significant improvements in our program and adhering to the best practices of animal comfort, well-being and travel on behalf of our customers and their pets."

"Transporting pets introduces a variety of risks and when United approached us, we knew we had to take on the challenge of helping improve and ensure the health, safety and comfort of so many animals," said Dr. Robin Ganzert, American Humane's president and chief executive officer. "United serves thousands of customers and their pets each day, and we saw it as our duty to come in as an independent, third party to help evaluate and further improve their PetSafe program and the in-cabin experience to ensure it offers one of the best in the industry."
