The University of Southern California and United Airlines Agree to Field Naming

LOS ANGELES – The University of Southern California and United Airlines announce a new agreement to name the field at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Under this 10-year deal commencing in August 2019, the field at the historic landmark, memorial to World War I veterans and home of the USC Trojans, will be referred to as United Airlines Field at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

USC and United worked together to reach an agreement that retains the original venue name while still providing funding to support a $315 million project to restore and preserve the Coliseum and upgrade its facilities for fans, athletes and the community.

"USC is honored to be the caretaker of this Los Angeles treasure and, together with United, we are ensuring the Coliseum's future as a world-class venue," said USC interim President Wanda M. Austin. "The naming of the field is a significant step in USC's efforts to usher in a modern era for this historic landmark and preserve its legacy. New Maintenance Complex Deepens United Airlines' Commitment to Los Angeles, with Nearly $1 Billion Recent Investment at LAX

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 28, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, United Airlines and Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) broke ground on a state-of-the-art Technical Operations Center (TOC) at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) that will enable the airline to provide exceptional service for all of its aircraft fleets. The new facility will include two connected buildings – a ground service equipment and facilities maintenance building and a line maintenance hangar, including an engine support shop that will focus on the aircraft's Dreamliner fleet. The commencement of this $352 million TOC pushes the airline's investments at its Los Angeles hub to nearly $1 billion in recent years.

The new TOC will consolidate two facilities that United currently operates at LAX that are located a mile and a half apart, improving efficiency with not only moving aircraft around the airport but with transporting employees, parts, tools and other supplies – ultimately leading to a more efficient operation for customers. The TOC will be located near the airline's terminal and stand at 407,408 square feet. The facility's hangar will be able to accommodate up to six narrow-body or two widebody aircraft at a time, supporting United's 150 flights that depart from LAX every day. The TOC will help United's growing operation in Los Angeles by continuing to deliver an on time, safe and reliable operation.

United is also investing in additional maintenance facilities at key airports around the country. Tampa airport authorities recently approved a ground lease for a new hangar that will have room for two Boeing 737MAX aircraft. The airline is also continuing construction on an expansive new technical operations center at Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport, which consolidates the airline's maintenance operations in a complex that provides greater efficiency and flexibility. United is also moving into a new hangar in Portland, Oregon and working with the City of Chicago to create a new hangar as part of the O'Hare Modernization Program.

United Airlines Announces Four New Domestic United Club Locations for 2019

CHICAGO, Feb. 4, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines today welcomed the newest addition to its network of more than 50 United Club locations around the world with the opening of a brand-new 5,000 square foot United Club at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. United Airlines Further Improves Airport Security Experience with the Opening of Automated Screening Lanes at Chicago O'Hare

CHICAGO, Nov. 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines today further modernized the airport security experience by becoming the first U.S.-based carrier to feature state-of-the-art, automated screening lanes at multiple airports with the opening of its fully redesigned TSA Precheck® security checkpoint in Terminal 1 at the airline's hometown hub of Chicago O'Hare. Additionally, United becomes the first and only airline in the country to exclusively dedicate automated lanes to a TSA Precheck® security checkpoint, continuing to increase efficiency and improve the screening experience for its customers.

The new lanes enable up to five customers to fill their individual bins simultaneously and move through the screening process quicker, even if TSA agents need to perform additional screening on a customer further up the queue. The lanes also utilize a parallel conveyor system that automatically returns empty bins to the front of the queue.

Last month, the airline launched automated screening lanes at its hub in Los Angeles and expects to open automated lanes at Newark Liberty International Airport, the airline's premier Trans-Atlantic gateway, before Thanksgiving. When United, in collaboration with the TSA, completes the installation, the newly centralized security checkpoint at Terminal C in Newark Liberty will feature 17 automated lanes.

United Airlines and Houston Airport System Break Ground on New Technical Operations Center at Bush Intercontinental Airport

HOUSTON, Oct. 25, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines, in partnership with the City of Houston and the Houston Airport System, will break ground today on the airline's new United Technical Operations Center (UTOC) at George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

The project, which is the next phase of United's ongoing expansion of facilities at its Houston hub, will add approximately 200,000 square feet of additional hangar capacity for maintaining widebody aircraft, in addition to a new warehouse distribution center, technical services building and administrative offices.

Once completed, the $162 million facility will accommodate widebody aircraft, including Boeing 767s, 777s, 787s and Airbus A350s, and provide an improved work environment with better ergonomics, safety and efficiency for United's maintenance technicians and support personnel.

CHICAGO, July 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) today announced plans to further modernize the airport security experience at several of the airline's largest hubs, marking the latest phase of an ongoing, collaborative strategy between United and the TSA to increase efficiency at security checkpoints and provide greater convenience for customers when applying for expedited screening.

As part of a joint initiative to improve the overall screening experience for customers, United, in collaboration with the TSA, will install state-of-the-art, automated security lanes, add permanent TSA Precheck® enrollment centers at convenient locations and redesign security checkpoints at several of the airline's most-frequented hub airports.

Automated Screening Lanes

United will debut the automated lanes at Newark Liberty International Airport, the airline's premier Trans-Atlantic gateway, this fall. When United, in collaboration with the TSA, completes the installation, the entire centralized security checkpoint at Terminal C in Newark Liberty will feature 17 automated lanes. The airline plans to install additional automated lanes at its hubs in Chicago and Los Angeles later this year.

The new lanes enable up to five customers to fill their individual bins simultaneously and move through the screening process quicker, even if TSA agents need to perform additional screening on a customer further up the queue. The lanes also utilize a parallel conveyor system that automatically returns empty bins to the front of the queue.

Redesigned and Modernized Security Checkpoints

In addition to installing automated security lanes, United is building and redesigning checkpoints at several hubs throughout the airline's network that will dramatically improve the customer experience. Key initiatives include:

  • Installing audio and visual enhancements utilizing cutting-edge technology in the security queuing area to provide customers with more information.
  • Consolidating four checkpoints into one new, centralized checkpoint at Newark Liberty.
  • Redesigning security checkpoints at Chicago O'Hare.
  • Constructing a new, state-of-the-art customer check-in area and a consolidated security screening checkpoint in Terminal 7 at Los Angeles International Airport.

TSA Precheck Enrollment Centers

United and the TSA recently announced the opening of a temporary TSA Precheck enrollment center at United's signature space at Penn Station in New York City and will install a temporary enrollment center in the lobby of the Willis Tower in downtown Chicago  in August. These off-airport sites will provide the airline's customers with the ability to complete the entire TSA Precheck enrollment process without needing to visit an airport location. 

Later this summer, United and the TSA also plan to open permanent enrollment centers at the airline's hub airports in Chicago, Newark, Houston, Los Angeles and San Francisco, offering more customers greater convenience when applying for TSA Precheck status. United and the TSA currently have permanent TSA Precheck enrollment centers at the airline's hubs in Denver and Washington-Dulles.

Additionally, United is enabling members of its award-winning MileagePlus loyalty program to redeem miles later this summer when applying for TSA Precheck status.

United Airlines and OTG Announce Plans to Enhance the Airport Experience at Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport

Houston, May 12, 2016United Airlines and OTG announced plans today to elevate the dining and retail experience in United’s terminals at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, a key hub in the airline’s global network.

The innovative in-terminal experience will include the creation of restaurants inspired by some of the region’s most notable chefs, thousands of iPads equipped with OTG’s award-winning customer experience platform, flo®, farm-to-terminal offerings from local markets and spaces designed by renowned architecture firm Rockwell Group.

OTG will oversee all food, beverage and retail operations for Terminal B South, Terminal C (including the new C North Concourse which opens in 2017) and Terminal E.

New concepts have already begun to open with five of OTG’s award-winning CIBO Express Gourmet Markets and the Republic Grille - all in Terminal E. The markets feature an array of healthy options and offerings from local purveyors.

United’s customers and employees will see the biggest transformation with the opening of the new C North Concourse planned for early next year. Details of the chefs and designs were released today.

Chef-Driven Dining with Unique Local Flavor: Plans for C North include a variety of new dining venues with five local and notable chefs set to consult on the restaurant concepts and menus. They include:

  • Chef Roland Laurenzo will create a Taqueria reminiscent of famed El Tiempo Cantina. Laurenzo and his family are a dynasty in Houston - his mother, Mama Ninfa, is credited with introducing fajitas to the United States via Houston in the 1970’s.
  • Chef Ryan Pera will bring local, seasonal pizzas to the terminal, a reflection of his strong dedication to sustainable practices as demonstrated at his celebrated restaurant Coltivare. Named one of the best new restaurants in the country by Bon Appetit, Coltivare, inspired by Pera’s Italian heritage, uses Gulf Coast ingredients. 
  • Chef John Nguyen is famous in Houston for merging Cajun seafood staples with Vietnamese flair at the Cajun Kitchen.
  • Chef Monica Pope will create a locally-inspired Panini Bar. Pope shares her passion for connecting local farmers and consumers with cooking classes as well as owning Houston’s own Sparrow Bar + Cookshop and Beaver’s restaurants.
  • Chef Chris Shepherd, 2014 James Beard Best Chef Southwest, will open a Houston-focused tavern, featuring the flavors of the city’s diverse population. His restaurant, Underbelly, is inspired by the city and aims to tell the story of Houston food.

United Airlines Applies to Continue Service Between Haneda and San Francisco; Begin Service from Newark Liberty

CHICAGO, April 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines today applied to the U.S. Department of Transportation for authority to continue to provide daily nonstop service from the airline's trans-Pacific gateway in San Francisco to Haneda Airport in downtown Tokyo. The airline also applied to begin serving Haneda with daily nonstop service from its hub at Newark Liberty International Airport. United currently serves four Asia Pacific points from Newark Liberty, more than any other U.S. carrier in the Newark/New York City metropolitan area.

United Airlines Made SFO the Best Pacific Hub. And Then Found 3 Ways to Make it Better.

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines, the U.S. airline with the most comprehensive route network and the most trans-Pacific service, will further expand its global reach with new nonstop service from San Francisco to:

  • Tel Aviv, Israel, with service three times each week beginning March 30, 2016;
  • Auckland, New Zealand, with service three times each week beginning July 1, 2016, expanding to daily service in October; and
  • Xi'an, China, previously announced, three-times-weekly service beginning May 8, 2016, for the summer season.

Each new service is subject to government approval.

The airline intends to operate the new flights with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the world's most advanced passenger airplane.

The Tel Aviv and Xi'an flights will be available for booking on united.com on October 10, 2015, with the Auckland flights available for booking on October 17, 2015.

San Francisco-Tel Aviv: Linking High-Tech Markets

As part of United's evaluation for serving San Francisco (SFO) to Tel Aviv (TLV) nonstop, the airline considered the opinions of thousands of customers who petitioned for the service through the SFOTLV.ORG petition effort.

United Airlines Launches 'United Ground Express' Ground Handling Service

CHICAGO, Aug. 10, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines today launched United Ground Express, a wholly owned subsidiary, to provide ground handling services at select airports. Although it is a separate company from United Airlines, United Ground Express will align with United's flyer friendly customer service philosophy. United Ground Express recently began recruiting to place qualified applicants in available positions and launched a new website with additional information, unitedgroundexpress.com.
