United Airlines Further Improves Airport Security Experience with the Opening of Automated Screening Lanes at Chicago O'Hare

November 14, 2016

CHICAGO, Nov. 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines today further modernized the airport security experience by becoming the first U.S.-based carrier to feature state-of-the-art, automated screening lanes at multiple airports with the opening of its fully redesigned TSA Precheck® security checkpoint in Terminal 1 at the airline's hometown hub of Chicago O'Hare. Additionally, United becomes the first and only airline in the country to exclusively dedicate automated lanes to a TSA Precheck® security checkpoint, continuing to increase efficiency and improve the screening experience for its customers.

The new lanes enable up to five customers to fill their individual bins simultaneously and move through the screening process quicker, even if TSA agents need to perform additional screening on a customer further up the queue. The lanes also utilize a parallel conveyor system that automatically returns empty bins to the front of the queue.

"As the first and only U.S.-based airline to launch automated screening lanes in multiple airports, United continues its commitment to using the latest technology to meet the changing needs of our customers and improve the airport experience," said Greg Hart, United's executive vice president and chief operations officer.

"We are very appreciative of the ongoing collaboration between TSA and our industry partners such as United," said TSA Administrator Peter Neffenger. "Working together in our efforts to deploy effective, state-of-the-art technologies such as these automated lanes in Terminal 1 at O'Hare furthers TSA's ability to fulfill its security mission while also enhancing the travel experience."

"Establishing these automated screening lanes at TSA checkpoints is an important part of sustaining the success we achieved since last spring," said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. "We've gone from an unacceptable 104 minute wait time at peak hours at O'Hare to some of the shortest in the country among major airports. With the will, and the right technology, we will continue this progress. And I want to thank United Airlines for opening the latest automated screening lanes here at O'Hare."

The opening of the newly redesigned security checkpoint and three automated screening lanes at O'Hare marks the latest step in United's ongoing strategy to use the latest technology to ensure customers have a reliable experience during their travels. Last month, the airline launched automated screening lanes at its hub in Los Angeles and expects to open automated lanes at Newark Liberty International Airport, the airline's premier Trans-Atlantic gateway, before Thanksgiving. When United, in collaboration with the TSA, completes the installation, the newly centralized security checkpoint at Terminal C in Newark Liberty will feature 17 automated lanes.

In addition to installing automated screening lanes, United is building and redesigning checkpoints at several hubs throughout the airline's network that will dramatically improve the customer experience. Key initiatives include:

  • Installing audio and visual enhancements utilizing cutting-edge technology in the security queuing area to provide customers with more information.
  • Consolidating four checkpoints into one new, centralized checkpoint at Newark Liberty.
  • Redesigning security checkpoints at Chicago O'Hare.
  • Constructing a new, state-of-the-art customer check-in area and a consolidated security screening checkpoint in Terminal 7 at Los Angeles International Airport.

May 11, 2016

Houston, May 12, 2016United Airlines and OTG announced plans today to elevate the dining and retail experience in United's terminals at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, a key hub in the airline's global network.

The innovative in-terminal experience will include the creation of restaurants inspired by some of the region's most notable chefs, thousands of iPads equipped with OTG's award-winning customer experience platform, flo®, farm-to-terminal offerings from local markets and spaces designed by renowned architecture firm Rockwell Group.

OTG will oversee all food, beverage and retail operations for Terminal B South, Terminal C (including the new C North Concourse which opens in 2017) and Terminal E.

“United is pleased to bring this industry-leading airport experience concept to our Houston hub," said Gavin Molloy, United's vice president of corporate real estate. “The collaboration with OTG will provide exceptional food, beverage and retail options with the comfort and high-tech amenities that travelers today want."

“Our OTG team is excited about working with United to transform the airline's terminals at George Bush Intercontinental Airport into a hot spot for wonderful food and great shopping," said Rick Blatstein, OTG's chief executive officer. “This will be a brand new airport experience for Houston travelers including restaurants inspired by local chefs, the addition of modern amenities such as iPads, redesigned gate areas and world-class shopping. We are thrilled to be part of this partnership."

New concepts have already begun to open with five of OTG's award-winning CIBO Express Gourmet Markets and the Republic Grille - all in Terminal E. The markets feature an array of healthy options and offerings from local purveyors.

United's customers and employees will see the biggest transformation with the opening of the new C North Concourse planned for early next year. Details of the chefs and designs were released today.

Chef-Driven Dining with Unique Local Flavor: Plans for C North include a variety of new dining venues with five local and notable chefs set to consult on the restaurant concepts and menus. They include:

  • Chef Roland Laurenzo will create a Taqueria reminiscent of famed El Tiempo Cantina. Laurenzo and his family are a dynasty in Houston - his mother, Mama Ninfa, is credited with introducing fajitas to the United States via Houston in the 1970's.
  • Chef Ryan Pera will bring local, seasonal pizzas to the terminal, a reflection of his strong dedication to sustainable practices as demonstrated at his celebrated restaurant Coltivare. Named one of the best new restaurants in the country by Bon Appetit, Coltivare, inspired by Pera's Italian heritage, uses Gulf Coast ingredients.
  • Chef John Nguyen is famous in Houston for merging Cajun seafood staples with Vietnamese flair at the Cajun Kitchen.
  • Chef Monica Pope will create a locally-inspired Panini Bar. Pope shares her passion for connecting local farmers and consumers with cooking classes as well as owning Houston's own Sparrow Bar + Cookshop and Beaver's restaurants.
  • Chef Chris Shepherd, 2014 James Beard Best Chef Southwest, will open a Houston-focused tavern, featuring the flavors of the city's diverse population. His restaurant, Underbelly, is inspired by the city and aims to tell the story of Houston food.

More on these local chefs can be found here.

Innovative Design: World-renowned architecture and design firm Rockwell Group will lead the cutting-edge transformation of the dining and retail spaces, which will include social media moments to provide an eye-catching backdrop for travelers to snap and share photos of their travel experience.

Renderings of the designs can be found here.

Leading-Edge Technology: Another unique offering will be OTG's 2U™ feature that allows customers to order food, retail and other amenities from an airport iPad and have it delivered, whether within a restaurant or at the gate. The nearly 8,000 iPads throughout the terminals will also offer a variety of entertainment options for travelers to enjoy before their flight.

United and OTG have collaborated to enhance benefits for MileagePlus members at Bush Intercontinental by enabling them to use award miles to purchase items at select CIBO Express Gourmet Markets in Terminal E. Together, United and OTG will roll out this capability to more locations in the airport in coming months.

OTG is investing significant capital to transform current and future spaces, including the development of tech-enhanced gate areas featuring lounge-style seating, USB power outlets and iPads from which guests can order food and amenities, browse the web, play games and more.

These plans will also continue to meet or exceed United's ACDBE and minority-participation goals and commitments to the City of Houston. United will work with OTG to develop these plans, which are expected to roll out over several years.

In 2014, OTG began transforming United's Terminal C at Newark Liberty by introducing cutting edge technology, chef-driven dining and trendsetting design. The full experience at Newark Liberty is expected to be completed at the end of 2016.

United Airlines Applies to Continue Service Between Haneda and San Francisco; Begin Service from Newark Liberty

April 21, 2016

CHICAGO, April 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines today applied to the U.S. Department of Transportation for authority to continue to provide daily nonstop service from the airline's trans-Pacific gateway in San Francisco to Haneda Airport in downtown Tokyo. The airline also applied to begin serving Haneda with daily nonstop service from its hub at Newark Liberty International Airport. United currently serves four Asia Pacific points from Newark Liberty, more than any other U.S. carrier in the Newark/New York City metropolitan area.

"United's proposed service will connect two centers of global commerce and culture with Tokyo's close-in airport and offer customers more options for travel between the U.S. and Japan," said Steve Morrissey, United's vice president of regulatory and policy. "More than 150,000 customers from large and small communities across the U.S. have benefitted from United's San Francisco-Haneda service. We hope the DOT reaffirms its earlier decision that this route provides numerous consumer and competitive benefits."

United's application follows the DOT's recent announcement that the U.S. and Japanese governments amended the nations' air transport agreement enabling U.S. carriers to operate daytime flights to and from Haneda Airport. United's proposed daytime service to Haneda will provide customers with more convenient access to points throughout Asia from San Francisco and Newark Liberty. United offers more nonstop flights between the U.S. mainland and Asia Pacific destinations than any other airline.

Sneak Peek: Convenience, Comfort and Class to Await United Customers at New-Look LAX

May 13, 2015

LOS ANGELES, May 13, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Just days after breaking ground on its new Terminal C North Concourse at Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport, United today previewed yet another major hub investment that promises to deliver a superior experience for the airline's customers at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). With a price tag of more than half a billion dollars, United's LAX redevelopment project will refresh virtually all of its customer-facing space at the airport, offering more of the conveniences and premium amenities travelers value.

Joined by employees from each of the airline's work groups, United executives outlined the company's plans during a special ceremony at LAX that featured local dignitaries including Eric Garcetti, mayor of Los Angeles; Tom LaBonge, Los Angeles city councilmember; Sean Burton, president of the Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) Board of Commissioners; and Gina Marie Lindsey, executive director of LAWA. The airline also unveiled several design renderings depicting some of the flyer-friendly changes that will greet customers between now and December 2017, when United expects to complete its renovations.

To download high-resolution renderings showcasing United's planned terminal improvements at LAX, visit the airline's newsroom at http://newsroom.unitedcontinentalholdings.com/LAXenhancements.

"From a state-of-the-art ticketing lobby to a sleek and spacious United Club lounge, we are enhancing the airport experience at LAX and giving our customers more of what they want when traveling – greater choice and control, consistency and comfort," said Sandra Pineau-Boddison, senior vice president for Customers at United. "We are grateful to the City of Los Angeles for its partnership on this project, which helps ensure this key United hub remains one of the country's premier global gateways."

"Today's investment by United is the latest in our more than $7 billion overhaul of LAX," said Garcetti. "Whether by upgrading nearly every terminal or bringing in ridesharing services to pick you up, we're making LAX a world-class airport befitting of our global city."

"The partnership we have with United will create the world-class experience we want for all LAX passengers," said Burton. "As our passenger base continues to grow, we are working hard to improve the guest experience, making their journey through LAX more efficient and comfortable today and in the future."

Upon arriving at LAX, United customers will step foot into an expansive ticketing lobby that incorporates the latest self-service tools such as self-tagging baggage kiosks. These intuitive technologies, along with an improved security screening checkpoint, will enable travelers to move quickly and efficiently from curb to gate.

United's new-look terminals and gate areas will feature a modern design with relaxed and inviting spaces, including a variety of comfortable seating options and abundant charging stations for customers' electronic devices. United Club members will also enjoy the airline's new, expanded Terminal 7 lounge where they can work or relax in style while taking in spectacular views of the airfield from the club's outdoor terrace. Located atop the terminal, the exclusive terrace offers United Club members additional respite from the hustle and bustle of their travel day.

United and Houston Airport System Break Ground on All-New Terminal C North at IAH

May 11, 2015

HOUSTON, May 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines, in partnership with Houston Mayor Annise Parker and the Houston Airport System, will break ground today on the airline's new Terminal C North concourse at George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

Floor-to-ceiling windows in the new concourse will offer soaring tarmac views, expansive gate-lounge areas will provide higher levels of comfort and 20 new dining and retail options near boarding gates will give Houstonians and travelers connecting through the airport more of the varied options they enjoy.

The $244 million project will create a 265,000-square-foot facility, more than 100,000 square feet larger than the existing Terminal C North, with 11 passenger boarding gates to accommodate a mix of United's narrow-, mid- and wide-body aircraft.

When construction on the new concourse is completed, the Houston Airport System will demolish the existing Terminal C North facility at Bush Intercontinental to enable the reconstruction of the Mickey Leland International Terminal D. The international terminal is critical to Bush Intercontinental's extensive connecting air traffic, particularly for those customers connecting between United flights and flights operated by United's international airline partners.

High-resolution exterior renderings of United's new Terminal C North are available in the airline's newsroom at newsroom.united.com/IAH-NewTerminalCNorth.

"The partnership that exists between the City of Houston and United Airlines continues to grow stronger in a variety of important ways," says Houston Mayor Annise Parker. "United continues to connect Houston on a global level through the launching of new nonstop flights and they continue to partner with the city's airport system on vital infrastructure projects, which dramatically improve the overall travel experience for millions of people."

"Through this next phase of our ongoing facilities expansion at Bush Intercontinental, United's customers will enjoy more of the comforts and amenities they have come to expect, and that have made Houston a premier international gateway and a cornerstone of United's global network," says Jim Compton, United's vice chairman and chief revenue officer.

United expects to complete the new Terminal C North concourse in early 2017.
