United Airlines Wants to Send the Hardest Working Person in America to Tahiti

September 04, 2018

CHICAGO, Sept. 4, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Every year, more than 700 million vacation days go unused across the United States, signaling that Americans are working harder and not taking the time off they've earned to unplug, relax and recharge. United Airlines today announced Time Off in Tahiti, a contest designed to recognize the hardest-working person in the country with a dream trip to the islands of Tahiti. Nominations can be submitted at united.com/timeofftahiti.

"With the unofficial end to summer this past weekend, it's disheartening to think that so many Americans won't have had a chance to use vacation days and get time away from the daily grind to experience something different," said Toby Enqvist, United's Chief Customer Officer. "This is why we're so excited about this contest – it presents the opportunity for the deserving winner to experience some of the most relaxing scenery in the world in Tahiti."

"The benefits of getting away are unparalleled – from improving your on-the-job performance and physical and mental wellbeing to enhancing your personal relationships," said Katie Denis of Project: Time Off. "United is helping to raise awareness about the importance of taking time off to travel, which our research has proven to be the most effective way to use vacation days. In fact, those who use the majority of their vacation days for travel are significantly happier than those who travel very little or not at all."

Do you or someone you know deserve some Time Off in Tahiti?

The winner could be anyone – mom, sister, brother, dad, wife, husband, friend, boss, co-worker or you – the possibilities are endless because each person's story is unique. Entering the contest is easy and encourages nominators to speak from the heart about why the nominee deserves Time Off in Tahiti. To enter, simply identify someone who deserves the trip and time off – whether it's someone who works 80-hour weeks, a stay-at-home parent, or someone working multiple jobs to make ends meet – and compose a 300-word submission on why they deserve the trip.

The United journey of a Lifetime

The winner of United's Time Off in Tahiti contest and their guest will fly from their hometown to San Francisco and then on to Papeete, Tahiti for the ultimate getaway. The journey includes a visit to the United Polaris lounge at San Francisco International Airport, where they will find space to relax, dine and refresh before their flight to Tahiti. They will then fly in United Polaris business class to Tahiti.

In addition to the round-trip flight, hotel accommodations for three nights at the Intercontinental Tahiti Resort and Spa, two nights at the Intercontinental Moorea Resort and Spa and two nights at the Maitai Rangiroa, as well as transportation between islands, access to local sights and a $2,000 prepaid card to personalize the trip is also included.

All Work and No Play is Bora Boring

Approximately half of full-time workers surveyed by Project: Time Off did not take all of the paid vacation days they earned last year. Workers are giving up more than a well-deserved break, when they give up vacation days. Project: Time Off has found that traveling can positively impact work performance and overall wellbeing:

  • Those who use most of their vacation days for travel reported a higher likelihood of receiving a raise, bonus or both than those who travel little or not at all (51 percent compared to 44 percent) as well as greater physical health and well-being (61 percent compared to 49 percent).
  • Workers who use the majority of their vacation days for travel are significantly happier than those who travel less or not at all.
  • 82 percent of Americans want the opportunity to relax and reduce stress via travel/vacation.

Uniting Tahiti with the U.S.

Considered by many to be a once-in-a-lifetime, bucket list vacation destination, the islands of Tahiti and the neighboring French Polynesian islands of Moorea, Bora Bora and Huahine are accessible with United's new nonstop flight from San Francisco. Launching October 30, United will be the only U.S. carrier offering nonstop service between the mainland U.S. and Tahiti. This new route will operate three times weekly and offer seasonal service through March 28, 2019 with Boeing 787-8 aircraft.

For complete rules and to enter, visit united.com/timeofftahiti. The contest runs through September 25 and winners will be selected on or around October 15.

"As we begin celebrating 20 years of service in Israel, we want to thank our customers and employees who have helped make United the top U.S. airline serving Israel," said Patrick Quayle, United's vice president of International Network. "We thank the Israeli government for its ongoing support and partnership. We look forward to continuing to serve Israel with this new service for our customers traveling between the U.S. capital and one of the most advanced science and technology sectors in the world."

United's new service between Washington Dulles and Tel Aviv will offer convenient connections to nearly 70 destinations in the United States, including Houston, Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, Cleveland, Dallas and Miami.

"We are thrilled to welcome another United Airlines flight to Israel from the United States," said Yariv Levin, Israel's Minister of Tourism. "Today's announcement is a wonderful way to celebrate United's 20 year history in Israel and opens many more opportunities for both countries to continue to build strong relationships while growing business and expanding tourism."

Washington Dulles, a United hub since 1986, offers customers more than 230 flights daily across its domestic network and more than 30 international flights to key business and leisure destinations to 24 countries in Europe, Asia and the Americas. The airport is the region's key gateway to international economic and tourism development.

This year, Virginia's Fairfax County Economic Development Authority announced nearly 1,000 new jobs to the area, many with direct ties to businesses based in Israel, which is known as a leader in technology, biotechnology, life sciences, pharmaceuticals and defense industries. United's new flight will offer customers convenient, nonstop access between Israel and Washington, D.C., and surrounding areas, including high-tech business centers in Fairfax and Loudoun Counties in Virginia. Customers traveling beyond Washington, D.C., will find convenient connecting opportunities to more than 200 United flights throughout the United States to key business and leisure destinations.

United Airlines has continuously served Israel since August 1999, when the airline began daily service between its New York/Newark hub and Tel Aviv, and in 2004 it increased to two flights daily. In response to a growing demand for business and tourism travel, United became the first U.S. airline to operate nonstop service between the U.S. West Coast and Tel Aviv from its hub in San Francisco in March 2016, operating three flights weekly with Boeing 787-9 aircraft. In October 2016, United increased its service to daily and earlier this year began operating its newest aircraft, the Boeing 777-300ER, from San Francisco (seasonally) and New York/Newark (year-round).

United Airlines Expands East Coast Schedule, Maximizing New York and Washington, D.C. Hubs

May 14, 2018

NEW YORK, May, 14, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines (UAL) today announced it is expanding its schedule at its East Coast hubs in New York/Newark and Washington-Dulles. The network adjustments build on United's leading route network at New York/Newark where the airline serves more destinations than any other carrier from the New York City metro area. Additionally, the changes to its Washington-Dulles schedule will offer more customers easy access to the nation's capital and seamless connections to flights throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia and the Caribbean.

Beginning in October, United will maximize the unique strengths of each hub by adding new destinations, additional frequencies and larger two-cabin aircraft. The schedule adjustments are designed to offer more nonstop flights to destinations popular with New York area customers while reallocating largely connecting passenger flights on short-haul routes to United's hub at Washington-Dulles. United will transition service between New York/Newark and Chattanooga, Tennessee; Ithaca, New York, and Scranton, Pennsylvania to Washington-Dulles.

"We approached these schedule adjustments with our customers in mind, knowing that we wanted to create a schedule that offers customers beginning their travel in the New York City area convenient flights to many of the business and leisure destinations they frequent the most," said Ankit Gupta, United's Vice President of Domestic Network. "Since more of our customers begin their travel from New York/Newark than any other United hub city, we've created a more customer friendly schedule that removed connection times and provided convenient nonstop service to multiple U.S. destinations."

New York/Newark (EWR)

Offering customers more flights to more destinations than any other airline in the New York City region, United is increasing nonstop service between New York/Newark and 15 destinations, beginning October 4, 2018.

United Airlines Increases to Daily Service Between Houston and Havana

May 07, 2018

HOUSTON, May 7, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines today announced it is increasing service between Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Havana's José Martí International Airport beginning July 20. Subject to government approval, United will operate the new daily service with either Boeing 737-800 mainline aircraft or Embraer E175 regional aircraft operated by Mesa Airlines as United Express. Tickets are now available for purchase.

"This expansion to Havana will provide significant public benefits to our city, region and state. As a diverse global city – in which many people speak Spanish – we are heavily reliant on international travel for our economic success," said Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. "Worldwide access to Houston by air helps bring financial health back to Houston after Hurricane Harvey. The addition of Havana to Houstonians' travel options will also help us build cultural bridges with our neighbor nation across the gulf."

"United's new daily service to Cuba will offer more opportunities to connect our customers traveling from Houston and the central and western United States directly to Havana," said Patrick Quayle, United's vice president of International Network. "Houston is United's gateway to Latin America and its convenient location offers customers easy access to connect to 44 destinations across our broad domestic network."

Onboard products and services

United will operate service between Houston and Havana with either Boeing 737-800 mainline aircraft or Embraer E175 regional aircraft. Mesa Airlines will operate regional jet aircraft as United Express. Embraer E175 two-cabin regional jet offers 12 seats in United First and 64 seats in United Economy, including 16 extra-legroom Economy Plus seats. The E175 also offers more personal space for customers, with wider seats and aisles than other regional aircraft; a power outlet at each United First seat; United Wi-Fi; free access to a library of movies and TV shows that customers can watch on their personal devices' and large overhead bins that can accommodate standard-size carry-on bags.

United in Cuba

From Houston, United provides the only service to Havana from the entire central and western United States. In 2017, United Airlines opened its first city ticket office in Havana enabling United to provide Cubans and other international customers the opportunity to purchase travel on United Airlines. United also provides daily nonstop service between New York/Newark and Havana.

CHICAGO, April 26, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines (UAL) kicks off its 2018 summer seasonal travel schedule offering more options for customers from more than 100 North American cities to conveniently connect to Europe and Latin America with just one stop. United's new offerings this summer include Iceland, Portugal, Scotland and Switzerland and the return of nonstop services between six of its U.S. hub cities and popular destinations in Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Spain and Sweden.

"This summer, United is offering customers more opportunities for international travel than any other U.S. airline," said Patrick Quayle, United's vice president of International Network. "Customers now have more options to visit new destinations in Europe or to return to their favorite cities in Latin America and the Caribbean."

Choose from 25 European destinations this summer
In addition to offering customers new destinations, including Reykjavik, Iceland, and Porto, Portugal, United will be returning with seasonal service to 25 destinations, including Athens, Greece; Glasgow, Scotland; Madrid and Barcelona, Spain; Rome and Venice, Italy; Shannon, Ireland; and more.

This year, United has extended its trans-Atlantic summer route schedule from Chicago, San Francisco and Washington/Dulles, offering flights earlier in the season and operating through October. The airline's daily seasonal service between Chicago and Edinburgh, Scotland, and between San Francisco and Munich, Germany, begins May 4 and ends October 26, and seasonal service between Chicago and Dublin and between Washington/Dulles and Lisbon, Portugal, started earlier this month and will end October 26.

Rediscover beautiful Caribbean Islands and Mexico
United is also resuming service to many of the Caribbean destinations impacted by hurricanes last year, including St. Maarten and St. Thomas. Earlier this year, United reinstated daily service between New York/Newark and Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, and continues ramping up service to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where United offers up to twice-daily service from New York/Newark and up to daily service between San Juan and Chicago, Houston and Washington, D.C. United currently offers daily service between Washington, D.C., and St. Thomas.

Customers in Louisiana and Texas looking for another way to get to Cancun, Mexico, can choose United's new weekend seasonal service from New Orleans and San Antonio beginning June 9.

Vacation shouldn't end in the summer
This fall, United will launch nonstop service between San Francisco and Pape'ete, the capital of Tahiti, the South Pacific's gateway to more than 118 islands in French Polynesia, including Bora Bora, Moorea, the Marquesas and Raiatea.

United is the only U.S. carrier offering nonstop service to Tahiti from the mainland United States and will connect customers to the South Pacific's white sand beaches, stunning turquoise lagoons, coral atolls and volcanic mountain peaks. Visitors to the islands experience a tropical paradise with countless spaces to relax and reconnect in natural beauty and authentic French Polynesian island culture.

Customers can now book nonstop service from San Francisco to Pape'ete's Fa'a'ā International Airport for travel beginning Oct. 30, 2018, through March 28, 2019.

United and Mesa Airlines Receive Tentative Approval to Increase to Daily Service Between Houston and Havana

March 30, 2018

HOUSTON, March 30, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) today tentatively awarded United Airlines and Mesa Airlines authority to begin offering daily nonstop service between Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Havana's José Martí International Airport. Subject to final government approval, United will expand from Saturday-only service to daily service.

"On behalf of United Airlines, we applaud the U.S. Department of Transportation's decision to increase United service between Houston and Havana from Saturday-only to daily," said Steve Morrissey, United's vice president of regulatory and policy. "We also want to congratulate Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, as well as Texas Congressmen Kevin Brady, Gene Green, Pete Olson, Ted Poe, the Houston Airport System, the Greater Houston Partnership and the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for supporting our collective goal to improve air service between Houston and Havana and offering customers throughout the central and western United States more opportunities to make convenient connections in Houston."

Launched in December 2016, United's successful Saturday-only service between Houston and Havana has provided thousands of customers with greater choice and convenience when planning travel to Havana.

Houston, United's gateway to Latin America, is geographically well situated to connect flights from the central and western United States to Havana. United's increase in service will ensure greater competition in the marketplace and will improve air service opportunities to Havana for customers in Houston and 44 other destinations in the central and western United States.

Onboard products and services
United plans to operate service between Houston and Havana with either Boeing 737-800 mainline aircraft or Embraer E175 regional aircraft. Mesa Airlines will operate regional jet aircraft as United Express. Embraer E175 two-cabin regional jet offers 12 seats in United First and 64 seats in United Economy, including 16 extra-legroom Economy Plus seats.

United Economy offers complimentary food, soft drinks, juices, beer and wine, tea, coffee and inflight entertainment. Additionally, the seats feature adjustable headrests and personal on-demand entertainment systems.

United Airlines and Air New Zealand Announce New Nonstop Service Between Chicago and Auckland

March 27, 2018

AUCKLAND, New Zealand and CHICAGO, March 27, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Air New Zealand today announced it will begin new nonstop service between Auckland and Chicago, beginning Nov. 30, 2018. The new service announcement deepens the joint venture relationship between Air New Zealand and United Airlines. In addition to the new route announcement, United announced it will extend its seasonal service between San Francisco and Auckland to year-round beginning April 2019.

"We expect the addition of Chicago to our network to be an attractive option for Americans keen to explore New Zealand and Kiwis wanting to visit Chicago or head on to other North American destinations," says Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Christopher Luxon. "As well as being great for travelers, this new route is also good news for New Zealand, as we expect it to contribute around $70 million annually to our economy, and we know that more than 50 percent of spending by U.S. visitors is done outside of the main centers. We'll be working alongside our colleagues at United Airlines to grow the route and visitor numbers in both directions."

"By adding Chicago to the Air New Zealand route network, and with United's increased service between San Francisco and Auckland, we are proud to offer our customers more ways to get between the United States and New Zealand and more connection opportunities in those cities than any other airline in the world," said United's International Network Vice President Patrick Quayle. "Today's announcements are great examples of the customer benefits that result from the strong, strategic alliance and partnership between United Airlines and Air New Zealand."

Air New Zealand service between Auckland and Chicago

From Nov. 30, 2018, Air New Zealand will operate three times weekly, year-round service with its new configuration Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. Flight time will be approximately 15 hours northbound and just over 16 hours southbound. Air New Zealand code share service will be offered on around 100 flights across the U.S. for convenient connections to Auckland via Chicago. United Airlines operates more flights from its hub at O'Hare International Airport than any other airline, with more than 500 flights to 147 airports across the United States.

United expands service between San Francisco and Auckland

Beginning in April 2019, United will extend service between its West Coast hub in San Francisco and Auckland to year-round with three-times-weekly service. In partnership with Air New Zealand, United's flight arriving in Auckland will offer passengers more than 20 connections across the region. The return trip utilizes United's extensive route network in San Francisco, which provides connections to the United States, Canada, and Latin America. United operates more than 290 daily flights from its hub at San Francisco International Airport to 79 airports across the U.S. and 26 international destinations. Tickets for the expanded San Francisco schedule will be available on united.com and airnewzealand.com later this year.

United service between San Francisco and Auckland will operate with a Boeing 777-300ER between November and March and will operate with Boeing 777-200ER aircraft between April and October.

Since United and Air New Zealand began their alliance in 2016, the joint venture has opened up more travel options for U.S. and New Zealand travelers than ever before. Overall passenger volumes have grown as customers traveling from New Zealand to the U.S. connect to United's broad domestic network from its hubs in Houston, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Air New Zealand's new flights to Chicago are now available at airnewzealand.com and will be available on Friday, March 30, 2018 on united.com.
