The security of your MileagePlus® account is very important to you, and it’s important to us. We are now requiring that all accounts have a strong password, in addition to security questions. The next time you sign in to your account, you’ll be prompted to update your account to meet these new requirements. Once you update your account with a strong password and security questions, you’ll no longer be able to use your PIN to sign in. (For the moment, you may still need your PIN when you call the United Customer Contact Center, so keep it handy just in case.)
After you sign in to your account and select “Update now,” you’ll be asked to either add or verify your email address. This email address will be designated as the primary email address for your account. We’ll only use your email address to contact you about administrative, operational or security issues unless you indicate that you’d also like to receive marketing emails.

Select your security questions
Choose five security questions and answers that will be saved to your account. The security questions we use are meant to be difficult for others to guess or figure out through online research. (Be careful to not post your answers on social media.) Your questions will be used to verify your identity if you should happen to forget your password.
Create a more secure password
You may be asked to create a password, even if you already have a saved password. When selecting your password keep the following tips in mind:
• Passwords should have a minimum of eight characters, including at least one letter and one number.
• Use a combination of letters, numbers and special characters (such as “!” “&” or “+”).
• Passwords should not be easy to guess — avoid using the same password that you use for other accounts.
