Advancements in engine technology

Propulsion

787’s GEnx engines manufactured by GE deliver approximately 70,000 pounds of thrust, which helps move the aircraft through the air by overcoming drag and weight.

GE’s GEnx engines

United’s 787s are powered by two GEnx engines. A higher bypass ratio allows the engine to be quieter for the community and reduce fuel consumption. 787s are 20 percent more fuel efficient than a similarly sized airplane like the Boeing 767s and produce 20 percent fewer emissions.

Scalloping

The scalloped design of the 787’s engine nacelle engines produces less noise than other aircraft by blending the two exhausts that function in typical turbofan engines. 787s have a 60 percent smaller noise footprint than similarly sized aircraft.

Dimensions

The wingspan of a 787 is 197 feet. The wings cover a total of 3,501 square feet.

Design

The wings sweep back at 32.2 degrees. Smaller fairings reduce drag, while raked wing tips enhance wing efficiency.

Cargo capabilities

Capacity

787s have the same configuration and use the same containers as a Boeing 777, adding convenience for shippers.

A 787-8 has 4,393 cubic feet of space for cargo, including 1,258 cubic feet for baggage.

Weight

Dreamliners can carry cargo payloads ranging from 5 to 15 tons.

State-of-the-art flight deck

Heads up displays

The cockpit features a dual head up displays (HUDs), a small transparent screen that drops down in front of the pilots in order to improve visibility during difficult flying conditions while providing essential flight information.

Windows

The windows encompass 33.5 square feet, compared to 26.9 for a 767.

Displays

A 787 has fewer primary display screens but significantly more primary display space. The displays are more flexible, allowing pilots to configure displays to their preferences.

Flight deck

From an operational standpoint, the 787 flight deck is similar to that of a 777, providing for many identical procedures. In fact, the display formats are the same as a 777, including flight management computer pages.

Tactical map displays

The 787 includes full-time tactical map displays, larger format map displays and electronic flight bags.

United BusinessFirst®: An unrivaled travel experience

Overhead storage

Storage bins are the biggest in the industry – 30 percent larger than those on a 777. Each passenger will have an 11x16x22-inch space for their baggage.

LED lighting

LED lighting illuminates the cabin gently, creating a more relaxing experience.

Inflight entertainment

The next-generation personal on-demand entertainment system is accessible in 13 languages with more than 500 hours of programming.

Power

In-seat power outlets are available in each seat.

Seats

36 United BusinessFirst® seats recline 180 degrees to a 6’6” flat-bed.

Windows

Larger windows enable customers without window seats to look out windows and enjoy the view. Unique electrochromic shades dim the windows without a pull-down shade.

Vents

There are four air conditioning vents per row, which is double the amount in a conventional aircraft.

Pressurization

The 787 has a cabin altitude of 6,000 feet, compared to 8,000 feet for a typical aircraft. Altitude chamber tests show that because the body absorbs 8 percent more oxygen into the blood at this altitude, customers are less likely to experience headaches and fatigue.
