United Airlines Announces $1 Million Grant To Nation's Largest Food Bank

June 13, 2018

HOUSTON, June 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines announced today a $1 million grant to the Houston Food Bank in support of their School Market program. The School Market program was specifically expanded to assist children attending Harvey-affected schools, which were among the hardest hit after Hurricane Harvey.

United's investment in the Food Bank's School Market program will provide nutritious food to students at 25 schools, each serving an average of 200 households a year. Among the 25 schools, 10 schools will receive new United-branded brick and mortar pantries onsite and 15 will receive mobile pantries. All pantries will be open this fall for the new school year and provide families the opportunity to shop for food throughout the academic year. By improving the quality of food and providing more access to fruits and vegetables, the Houston Food Bank expects to help increase students' fruit and vegetable intake, improve their academic performance and school attendance.

"The Houston Food Bank made a tremendous impact on our community after the storm and United is proud to partner with them in providing additional support to Houston schools," United's Vice President of Houston Operations Rodney Cox said. "We understand that the Houston Food Bank is a life line for so many Houstonians and are confident that the School Market programs will create a positive and lasting effect on the community."

"United Airlines has a special connection to Houston and they continue to be a wonderful partner with the Houston Food Bank," says Brian Greene, president/CEO of the non-profit organization, the largest food bank in the nation. "Their latest grant will make it possible for us to provide food and nutrition educations to families, including many of whom were impacted by Hurricane Harvey. We thank United for making this important, substantial investment into one of its largest hub cities."

Today's announcement is the second in a series of announcements United is making in all of its domestic hub markets over the coming weeks. Each grant is a part of a total of $8 million in grants to help address critical needs identified by local leadership in each of its hub market communities – Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Newark/New York and Washington, D.C. The announcement represents United's commitment to invest in and lift up the communities where many of its customers and employees live and work.

Throughout these four-year grants, United will work hand-in-hand with local organizations and engage with city and community leadership to create profound, sustainable advancements. Future announcements will include grant recipients in Washington, D.C., Denver, New York/New Jersey; Los Angeles and San Francisco.

United Airlines Becomes First Carrier to Receive Audubon International's Green Hospitality Award

June 12, 2018

LOS ANGELES, June 12, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines reached yet another milestone in its role as the world's most environmentally conscious airline by becoming the first carrier to achieve certification through the new Audubon International Green Hospitality Program for the airline's United Club location in Terminal 7 of Los Angeles International Airport. Audubon International awarded United its gold-level certification in recognition of the airport lounge's exemplary indoor air quality, innovative composting program and overall dedication to environmental stewardship.

United and Audubon International, the not-for-profit environmental education organization dedicated to sustainable natural resource management, will continue to work together to further improve the sustainability of the airline's airport lounges around the globe, including its new United Polaris lounge locations at several major U.S. hubs. United has already achieved separate "Green Business" certifications for United Club locations from the cities of Los Angeles, Denver and San Diego.

United's achievement at Los Angeles International Airport follows the airline's historic launch of service in 2016 using commercial-scale volumes of sustainable aviation fuel at the Los Angeles hub for regularly scheduled departures.

"As an industry-leading airline in green initiatives, we are constantly pursuing ways to reduce our footprint, whether through our use of low-carbon, sustainable aviation biofuel or our revaluation of onboard materials that resulted in keeping 30,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide out of the air each year," said Gavin Molloy, United's vice president of corporate real estate and environmental affairs. "Teaming up with Audubon International enables us to further reduce our impact on the environment not just in the air but also at our facilities across our system."

"We're very happy to welcome United Airlines into our Green Hospitality program," said Christine Kane, Audubon International's chief executive officer. "United's focus on minimizing the environmental impact of its operation aligns perfectly with our mission to foster the sustainable use of natural resources in all the places people live, work and play. This partnership is a great example of how working together to improve individual aspects of one's daily life or business operation will result in a larger, and more positive, cumulative impact."

"At Los Angeles International Airport, being at the forefront of environmental sustainability is a top priority not only for our airport, but for our airline partners as well," said Samantha Bricker, Los Angeles World Airports' deputy executive director for environmental programs. "We are pleased that United chose this Los Angeles United Club lounge to be the first to achieve certification through the new Audubon International Green Hospitality Program and we look forward to continuing to work with United on environmental stewardship efforts."

Last year, United teamed up with Audubon International to protect raptors – including hawks, kestrels and owls – in and around New York-area airports and resettle the birds of prey at suitable golf course habitats where the species are more likely to thrive. The Raptor Relocation Program helps minimize risk to wildlife, reduce damage to aircraft and enable the airline to operate more efficiently within some of the world's busiest airspace.

United's award-winning Eco-Skies program represents the company's commitment to the environment and the actions taken every day to create a sustainable future. In 2017, Air Transport World (ATW) magazine named United the Eco-Airline of the Year for the second time since the airline launched the Eco-Skies program. This year, United Airlines ranked No. 1 among global carriers in Newsweek's Global 500 Green Rankings, one of the most recognized environmental performance assessments of the world's largest publicly traded companies.

United Airlines' First 737 MAX 9 Takes Flight from Houston's George Bush Intercontinental

June 07, 2018

HOUSTON, June 7, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, United Airlines (UAL) became the first North American carrier to operate the fuel efficient Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft. The brand new plane entered service as United flight 686 between United's hub at Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Orlando International Airport in Florida. The MAX is also scheduled to operate flights today between Houston and Anchorage, Alaska and Houston and Austin, Texas.

"The Boeing 737 MAX is a great addition to United's fleet, providing approximately 14 percent fuel efficiency compared to previous 737 generations and an improved customer experience onboard," said Rodney Cox, vice president of United's Houston operation. "As we begin the busy summer travel season, Houston is happy to be home for United's first MAX aircraft, as we launch initial 737 MAX service from here, and later this month, add MAX service on flights from Houston to L.A., Sacramento and Tampa."

To celebrate United's newest and "youngest" aircraft, the carrier is gifting 737 MileagePlus miles to all of its youngest MileagePlus members (members age 18 and under) who depart from Houston on one of its MAX flights today. All customers on United's first MAX flights from Houston today will also receive first flight certificates, travel cases and headphones to commemorate their trip on United's newest aircraft.

The 737 MAX utilizes Viasat next-generation satellite Wi-Fi, providing access to faster, more reliable internet connections gate to gate. United will expand Viasat Wi-Fi to more than 70 aircraft, including at least 58 new 737 MAX planes over the next three years.

The 737 MAX uses Boeing's Advanced Technology winglets and fuel efficient engines to provide a quieter ride and the ability to fly farther on less fuel. With a longer range than previous 737 models, United is able to operate the 737 MAX between Houston and Anchorage, Alaska, which previously needed to be served with larger aircraft. United expects to have 10 737 MAX aircraft in its fleet by the end of this year.

The thoughtful cocktail list includes the United Polaris Old Fashioned, a fresh take on the classic, complete with J. Rieger & Co. Kansas City Whiskey, a house simple syrup, Dale DeGroff bitters with a muddled orange wheel and Luxardo cherry, just like the legend himself — Dale DeGroff— makes it. A custom-designed a la carte dining menu blends international comfort foods, such as Moroccan-spiced braised lamb, with staples like the United Polaris Burger, which will be on the menu at all United Polaris lounges.

"More United customers begin their journey in the New York/New Jersey region than in any other of our hub cities. "We continue to add new international destinations from Newark, including Porto, Portugal and Reykjavik, Iceland, which we launched this month. The addition of the United Polaris lounge for our customers traveling on long-haul flights strengthens our service offering in Newark for the most enjoyable experience."

The opening of the United Polaris lounge at New York/Newark closely follows the debut of the United Polaris lounge at San Francisco International Airport in April. The United Polaris lounge at George Bush Intercontinental in Houston will open this summer, followed by the lounge at Los Angeles International Airport this fall.

The focus behind the United Polaris experience has always been to provide long-haul travelers with what they've asked for: better sleep in the sky. On average, United plans to add one aircraft with the new United Polaris business class seat every 10 days from now through 2020. Beginning July 1, every seat in the United Polaris cabin will be provisioned with a cooling gel pillow. The gel pillow, previously available by request, has proven to be one of the most popular items of United Polaris bedding.

United Airlines Announces $8 Million To Boost Eight Hub Communities

May 30, 2018

CHICAGO, May 30, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines announced today a total of $8 million in grants to help address pressing issues identified by local leadership in each of its hub market communities – Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Newark/New York and Washington, D.C. The announcement represents United's commitment to invest in and lift up the communities where many of its customers and employees live and work.

In its inaugural announcement today in Chicago, United shared that it will work with the nonprofit Year Up to help close the "Opportunity Divide." This grant for $1 million to Year Up in Chicago will enable the organization to provide hundreds of additional motivated and talented young adults in Chicago with in-demand technical and professional skills training, hands-on corporate internship experience at top companies including United, college credits and support necessary to achieve upward economic mobility and access to meaningful careers in just one year.

United's investment in Year Up Chicago is expected to grow the program's reach by 25 percent while also contributing to launching a second campus in connection with Harold Washington College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago and the City of Chicago.

"Connecting our customers to the moments that matter most goes well beyond getting them from point A to point B," said Oscar Munoz, United's chief executive officer. "We have the opportunity to make lasting, measurable change. We are proud to do our part to help our home here in Chicago and are excited to share more with each of our hub communities over the coming weeks."

"Here in Cook County, more than 94,000 young adults are out of work and out of school, disconnected from the economic mainstream," said Jack Crowe, Year Up Chicago's executive director. "With United Airlines' help, Year Up Chicago will be able to accelerate its expansion, strengthening our communities and Chicago as a whole."

Following today's announcement, United will be joining local community and city leadership in all of its domestic hub markets over the coming weeks to announce additional community grants. In each community, United worked with city leadership to identify a unique area of critical needs in the city as part of its larger efforts to lift up communities in crisis.

Throughout these four-year grants, United will work hand-in-hand with local organizations and engage with city and community leadership to create profound, sustainable advancements. Future announcements will include grant recipients in New York/New Jersey; Washington, D.C.; Houston; Denver; Los Angeles and San Francisco.
