United Airlines Provides Latest Update on Hurricane Irma

United Airlines Provides Latest Update on Operations and Relief Efforts with Hurricane Irma

September 09, 2017

CHICAGO, Sept. 9, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines is providing bonus miles, matching funds raised for relief, and added extra flights out of South Florida in preparation of Hurricane Irma's impact on the mainland. The airline also flew a Boeing 777 aircraft yesterday into San Juan, Puerto Rico to provide more options to customers and humanitarian resources to the region.

United is partnering with leading disaster relief organizations to provide aid to those impacted by Hurricane Irma. Beginning yesterday, United started its campaign to provide bonus miles to MileagePlus members who donate to the organizations. United will also match the first $100,000 raised.

United has resumed service in and out of San Juan, including flying a Boeing 777 to the island to provide more options to customers and humanitarian resources to the region. That flight contained supplies including water, amenity kits and food along with volunteers. On Thursday and Friday, United added 11 total flights into the southern Florida region, totaling more than 1,500 seats to help Floridians travel out of the state. Those seats were sold at an average price of $285. Additionally, we capped fares at $399 and further extended our travel waiver to help our customers and provide more options and flexibility. More information on the waiver can be found at United.com.

"My heart, and that of the entire United family, is with everyone that is suffering in the wake of Hurricane Irma and who remains in her path," said United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz. "We will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with them for all of the tomorrows required to rebuild and recover what was lost and to ensure the future remains as bright as ever."

MileagePlus members who give to the American Red Cross, AmeriCares, Airlink, Humane Society International or Operation USA through United's fundraising page can receive up to 1,000 bonus miles by entering their MileagePlus number at the time of their donation. Each of these organizations has teams deployed throughout the impacted areas to provide shelter, supplies, health care, and other much needed support to people in need.

United will award members miles based on the size of their donation:

  • Donate $50-$99 – Earn 250 bonus miles
  • Donate $100-$249 – Earn 500 bonus miles
  • Donate $250 or more – Earn 1,000 bonus miles

United will award bonus miles to customers on a first-come, first-served basis based on contributions made through the airline's fundraising page through 11:59 p.m. CDT on September 30, 2017. United customers have raised more than $8 million in the last 5 years for previous disaster relief campaigns. For more information and to make a donation, visit https://fundraising.crowdrise.com/ua-hurricane-relief

We suspended operations in South Florida (Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers and Palm Beach) Friday afternoon. Additionally, we plan to suspend operations at our other Florida airports (Tampa, Orlando and Jacksonville) beginning late afternoon Saturday. We will continue to assess the situation as we move through the weekend and ask that customers check united.com or our mobile app for the latest updates and developments.

Introducing Better Boarding at United Airlines

September 18, 2018

CHICAGO, Sept. 18, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, United Airlines is expanding enhancements to its boarding at gates in airports around the world. The updated better boarding process gives customers more space at the gate, less time waiting in line and improved boarding information to create a less stressful environment.

"The boarding process was one of the top areas customers told us they wanted improved," said Sarah Murphy, vice president of Global Operations Strategy, Planning and Design at United. "We listened to customers and employees as we tested a variety of processes on thousands of flights until we found a better boarding process that results in less time spent waiting in lines, improved communication and a better way to recognize our Premier® customers while balancing out the number of passengers in each boarding group."

The improvements start with reducing the number of boarding lanes from five to two, giving customers added space, more time to relax and less time spent in line. With more time, passengers can enjoy a nearby United Club or lounge or airport restaurants and shops before their flight. United app users will also receive a new alert when boarding has begun for their flight, making it easier to know when to make their way to the gate. In the future, United will expand these notifications to text messages. Digital displays in the gate area also keep customers informed with updated helpful boarding information.

United's enhanced boarding also provides an upgraded experience for some of the airline's top MileagePlus members. United's MileagePlus Premier 1K customers who previously boarded in group one, will now be invited to pre-board, and United's MileagePlus Premier Gold customers will also move up in the boarding process from group two to group one. These changes not only give these customers more time to settle into their seats, but also help balance out the number of customers in each of the airline's five boarding groups. United is also expanding its military pre-boarding group from uniformed military members to also include all active duty military members to even better recognize those serving our country. Qualifying United credit card holders will continue to receive priority boarding in group two.

United started testing a variety of boarding concepts in the fall of 2017, soliciting feedback from customers and employees along the way. After testing these changes at numerous airports, United received overwhelmingly positive feedback from customers and employees who experienced the better boarding process. United began rolling out aspects of this process, including updated signage at select airports across its network earlier this year, and putting it into effect at all gates at Los Angeles International Airport in February. Beginning September 18, the better boarding will appear at over 1,000 gates across the globe.

For more information on better boarding, including a video tutorial, visit the United Hub.

United Airlines Commits to a Cleaner Future; Becomes First U.S. Airline to Pledge to Reduce Own Emissions by 50 Percent by 2050

September 13, 2018

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines today made history by becoming the first U.S. airline to publicly commit to reducing its own greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent by 2050, further strengthening the carrier's ambition to be the world's most environmentally conscious airline. United's pledge to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent relative to 2005 represents the equivalent of removing 4.5 million vehicles from the road each year, or the total number of cars in Los Angeles and New York City combined. The airline will continue to invest in the company's ongoing environmental initiatives to support this commitment, including expanding the use of more sustainable aviation biofuels, welcoming newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft into its fleet and implementing further operational changes to better conserve fuel.

"At United, we believe there is no point in setting challenging and ambitious goals without also taking tangible steps towards achieving them, especially when it comes to securing the health of our communities and our planet," said Oscar Munoz, United's chief executive officer. "While we're proud to be first U.S. carrier taking such an ambitious step, it is a distinction we look forward to sharing as the rest of the industry catches up and makes similar commitments to sustainability."

Sustainable Aviation Biofuel Flight from San Francisco to Zurich

To celebrate this significant milestone, United will operate flight 44 tomorrow from its hub in San Francisco to Zurich with the carrier's most fuel-efficient aircraft – the Boeing 787 – via a blend of sustainable aviation fuel supplied by World Energy's California-based AltAir Fuels. The airline will use 16,000 gallons of biofuel at a 30/70 blend with conventional jet fuel for the flight to Zurich, representing the longest transatlantic flight to date - and longest by a U.S. airline - powered by a biofuel volume of this size. United has sourced more than 2 million gallons of sustainable aviation biofuel since 2016 and is responsible for more than 50 percent of the airline industry's commitments to biofuel.

United's Commitment to the Environment

United's commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions represents yet another first for the airline in an extensive list of innovative initiatives undertaken to reduce its impact on the environment. Several of United's most significant environmental achievements include:

  • Becoming the first airline globally to use sustainable aviation biofuel on an ongoing daily basis, marking a significant milestone in the industry by moving beyond test programs and demonstrations to the everyday use of low-carbon biofuels in ongoing operations.
  • Investing more than $30 million in California-based sustainable aviation fuels producer Fulcrum BioEnergy, which remains the single largest investment by any airline globally in alternative fuels. United's agreement to purchase nearly 1 billion gallons from Fulcrum BioEnergy is the largest offtake agreement for biofuel in the airline industry.
  • Becoming the first airline to fly with Boeing's Scimitar winglets, which reduce fuel consumption by an additional 2 percent; United is the largest Scimitar winglet operator today, with nearly 400 aircraft equipped with these winglets.
  • Becoming the first U.S. airline to repurpose items from the carrier's international premium cabin amenity kits and partnering with Clean the World to donate hygiene products to those in critical need.
  • Eliminating non-recyclable plastic stirring sticks and cocktail picks on aircraft and replacing them with an environmentally-friendly product made of 100 percent bamboo.
  • Continuing to replace its eligible ground equipment with cleaner, electrically powered alternatives, with nearly 40 percent of the eligible fleet converted to date.

United's Award-Winning Eco-Skies Program

United's award-winning Eco-Skies program represents the company's commitment to the environment and the actions taken every day to create a sustainable future. In 2017, Air Transport World magazine named United the Eco-Airline of the Year for the second time since the airline launched the Eco-Skies program. This year, United Airlines ranked No. 1 among global carriers in Newsweek's Global 500 Green Rankings, one of the most recognized environmental performance assessments of the world's largest publicly traded companies.

Bread Pudding for Breakfast: Chobani® Recipe Lands on United Airlines' Fall Menu

September 04, 2018

CHICAGO, Sept. 4, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines® and Chobani® have partnered to make one of the newest breakfast selections for United's Choice Menu "Bistro on board" program. As of Sept. 1, the banana bread pudding, which was created exclusively for United, is available on flights within the U.S. and flights to Canada, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean departing between 5:00 a.m. and 9:44 a.m.

Banana bread pudding

Inspired by recipes from Chobani®, United and Chobani® Chef Jake Briere reviewed dozens of breakfast concepts ranging from sweet to savory before landing on the banana bread pudding, which gives United customers a taste of fall in a comforting morning entree that is served warm. It is made with banana bread pieces and butterscotch chips baked in a vanilla egg custard and topped with oats, brown sugar and cinnamon. Chobani® Vanilla Greek Yogurt is used as a substitute for heavy cream, giving the dish a modern, healthier twist.

"Working with Chobani® to develop this recipe underscores the importance we place on offering customers an incomparable inflight dining experience," said Charlean Gmunder, United's vice president of catering operations. "Our fall menu entrees are both savory and comforting; we're confident that our customers will find something to enjoy during their journey."

In addition to the banana bread pudding, United introduced two other breakfast items, a new snack and two new craft beers on Sept. 1. The Choice Menu "Bistro on board" breakfast menu will now include overnight strawberry almond oats – coconut oatmeal with yogurt, shredded coconut and chia seeds and strawberry compote, topped with almond coconut granola – and a chorizo breakfast sandwich with a cage-free fried egg, pork chorizo patty and smoked cheddar cheese on a ciabatta roll. A new salami and cheese tray, which includes OLLI® Genoa salami, white cheddar cheese and flatbread crackers, has been added to the Snack Shop. The seasonal beers on United's onboard beverage menu also rotated to Goose Island® Midway IPA and Blue Point Brewing Company® Toasted Lager. United is the first airline to fly the Goose Island Midway IPA.

New cheeseburger, sandwich available in time for fall

Beginning Oct. 1, a new cheeseburger and chicken parmesan sandwich will be available for purchase on the lunch and dinner menu, which is offered on flights within the U.S. and flights to Canada, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean departing between 9:45 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. The new white cheddar cheeseburger is a beef patty with white cheddar cheese on an Asiago bun. It will be served with United's assortment of Sir Kensington's condiments, which include chipotle mayonnaise, ketchup and mustard. The new chicken parmesan sandwich features breaded chicken, mozzarella cheese and basil marinara sauce on an Italian-herbed ciabatta roll.

Choice Menu "Bistro on board" items are available for purchase on most flights with a scheduled flight time over three hours within the U.S. and flights to Canada, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Snack shop items are available on most flights with a scheduled flight time of over an hour and a half within North America, including the Caribbean and select Latin American cities as well as Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. You can view photos of the new menu items and learn more about United's Choice Menu items by visiting our website.

United Airlines Wants to Send the Hardest Working Person in America to Tahiti

September 04, 2018

CHICAGO, Sept. 4, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Every year, more than 700 million vacation days go unused across the United States, signaling that Americans are working harder and not taking the time off they've earned to unplug, relax and recharge. United Airlines today announced Time Off in Tahiti, a contest designed to recognize the hardest-working person in the country with a dream trip to the islands of Tahiti. Nominations can be submitted at united.com/timeofftahiti.

"With the unofficial end to summer this past weekend, it's disheartening to think that so many Americans won't have had a chance to use vacation days and get time away from the daily grind to experience something different," said Toby Enqvist, United's Chief Customer Officer. "This is why we're so excited about this contest – it presents the opportunity for the deserving winner to experience some of the most relaxing scenery in the world in Tahiti."

"The benefits of getting away are unparalleled – from improving your on-the-job performance and physical and mental wellbeing to enhancing your personal relationships," said Katie Denis of Project: Time Off. "United is helping to raise awareness about the importance of taking time off to travel, which our research has proven to be the most effective way to use vacation days. In fact, those who use the majority of their vacation days for travel are significantly happier than those who travel very little or not at all."

Do you or someone you know deserve some Time Off in Tahiti?

The winner could be anyone – mom, sister, brother, dad, wife, husband, friend, boss, co-worker or you – the possibilities are endless because each person's story is unique. Entering the contest is easy and encourages nominators to speak from the heart about why the nominee deserves Time Off in Tahiti. To enter, simply identify someone who deserves the trip and time off – whether it's someone who works 80-hour weeks, a stay-at-home parent, or someone working multiple jobs to make ends meet – and compose a 300-word submission on why they deserve the trip.

The United journey of a Lifetime

The winner of United's Time Off in Tahiti contest and their guest will fly from their hometown to San Francisco and then on to Papeete, Tahiti for the ultimate getaway. The journey includes a visit to the United Polaris lounge at San Francisco International Airport, where they will find space to relax, dine and refresh before their flight to Tahiti. They will then fly in United Polaris business class to Tahiti.

In addition to the round-trip flight, hotel accommodations for three nights at the Intercontinental Tahiti Resort and Spa, two nights at the Intercontinental Moorea Resort and Spa and two nights at the Maitai Rangiroa, as well as transportation between islands, access to local sights and a $2,000 prepaid card to personalize the trip is also included.

All Work and No Play is Bora Boring

Approximately half of full-time workers surveyed by Project: Time Off did not take all of the paid vacation days they earned last year. Workers are giving up more than a well-deserved break, when they give up vacation days. Project: Time Off has found that traveling can positively impact work performance and overall wellbeing:

  • Those who use most of their vacation days for travel reported a higher likelihood of receiving a raise, bonus or both than those who travel little or not at all (51 percent compared to 44 percent) as well as greater physical health and well-being (61 percent compared to 49 percent).
  • Workers who use the majority of their vacation days for travel are significantly happier than those who travel less or not at all.
  • 82 percent of Americans want the opportunity to relax and reduce stress via travel/vacation.

Uniting Tahiti with the U.S.

Considered by many to be a once-in-a-lifetime, bucket list vacation destination, the islands of Tahiti and the neighboring French Polynesian islands of Moorea, Bora Bora and Huahine are accessible with United's new nonstop flight from San Francisco. Launching October 30, United will be the only U.S. carrier offering nonstop service between the mainland U.S. and Tahiti. This new route will operate three times weekly and offer seasonal service through March 28, 2019 with Boeing 787-8 aircraft.

For complete rules and to enter, visit united.com/timeofftahiti. The contest runs through September 25 and winners will be selected on or around October 15.
