In April, United MileagePlus® members used their miles to treat their moms to a trip of a lifetime courtesy of our MileagePlus Exclusives "Beautiful Weekend for Beautiful Moms" package.

The weekend getaway began in Chicago, where customers from across the country boarded a special Mother's Day MileagePlus flight from O'Hare to Newark Liberty International Airport. After arriving in Newark, the group experienced a private welcome party at the airport before being whisked across the Hudson River to Manhattan. The MileagePlus members and their moms stayed at the Marriott Marquis Times Square and experienced Broadway like never before with a showing of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre along with an intimate question and answer session with the show's four leading cast members.

And making the trip even more special was the fact that our crew members brought their moms along for the ride. Captain Cindy Berkeley and First Officer Jeanne Lauro (both mothers themselves) piloted the O'Hare-Newark charter with their moms proudly sitting in the cabin behind them.

Ensuring the safety and comfort of the special guests in the cabin were mother and son flight attendants Max and Manuela Buechler, mother and daughter flight attendants Deb Gonsalves and Deja Sylvester and married couple Seth and Connie Hunka. Seth's mother, a retired flight attendant, also accompanied her son as a guest. Interestingly, co-workers Max and Manuela are a mother-child duo where the mentor/mentee roles are reversed in some ways.

"Max was working at United, and he told me that the airline was looking for more German speaking flight attendants," Manuela said. "He encouraged me to apply, and a year later I was accepted into a training class. We work together on flights, and although I'm his mother, he's the boss – he has two years of seniority on me. He helps me a lot when I have questions. If I hadn't had him, I don't know if I would still be here."

Max shared that this trip was more meaningful than flights he's taken with his mom before. "It was special because it was a family trip, for us and for the customers," he said. Max also reflected on the role that he has played in his mom's life. "The fact that I inspired her to pursue this career makes me feel good. This is my chance to give back to her, my chance to teach her the things that I know in the same way that she taught me when I was young."

In addition to the award-winning show and cast Q&A, the participants were also treated to brunch and professional hair and makeup services.

United Cargo operates more than 11,000 cargo-only flights in one year

On March 19, 2020, United operated its first flight carrying cargo without passengers on board. While the passenger cabin was empty, its cargo hold was completely full, carrying more than 29,000 pounds of commodities from Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) to Frankfurt Airport (FRA).

A year later, United Cargo has operated more than 11,000 cargo-only flights carrying more than 570 million pounds of freight. To support the COVID-19 pandemic recovery efforts, United Cargo has also transported more than 113 million pounds of medical and pharmaceutical products on both cargo-only and passenger flights as well as approximately 10 million COVID-19 vaccines, providing global communities access to the items they have needed most.

United joins UNICEF COVAX initiative

This week, we were honored to become the first U.S. airline to join the UNICEF Humanitarian Airfreight Initiative to combat the COVID-19 pandemic by transporting the vaccine and other critically needed supplies to underserved areas of the globe.
