Honoring our Military on Memorial Day

Houston ramper goes above and beyond for military customer

Memorial Day is one of the busiest travel weekend as people rush to spend the holiday with friends and loved ones. Amidst all this commotion, it is important to take a moment to remember our brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

At United, we have thousands of employees, retirees, friends and family members who served or are currently serving in the military. Carlos Moctezuma, a ramp service employee in Houston, is one member of our team who understands the significance of being a veteran, and he recently went above and beyond to deliver excellent service to one of our military customers.

Carlos was inspecting a damaged piece of luggage from an international flight when he noticed that the military uniform inside had gotten dirty. A veteran himself, Carlos recognized that the uniform belonged to a highly decorated Special Forces Master Sergeant.

"I know what it means to wear that uniform and what it means to earn that uniform," Carlos said.

For this reason, he took it upon himself to hand-clean the uniform, as well as every badge and medal on it the way he was taught during his military career. After an hour of cleaning, Carlos asked to personally deliver the uniform to the solider who had a short layover before his next flight.

Carlos brought the uniform to the gate and presented it to the soldier, who had tears in his eyes and repeatedly thanked Carlos and the rest of the United team. It turned out that the soldier was bringing his uniform to wear at a funeral the next day. This revelation made Carlos's actions even more meaningful for both the soldier and Carlos.

"Being in the military creates a band of brotherhood," said Carlos. "You may not know each other, but you know what the other person has been through and that creates a brotherhood."

Simple actions, like Carlos's, show the deep respect our employees have for those who have sacrificed so much for our country. This Memorial Day weekend, while you're enjoying get-togethers and barbecues, take a moment to think about why we commemorate this important holiday, and all of the brave men and women who gave their lives serving in our nation's armed forces.
