Meet United's Master Sommelier, Doug Frost - United Hub

Meet United's Master Sommelier, Doug Frost

By The Hub team, April 30, 2018

It takes a discerning palate to pair wine and food, and an even more discerning one to pair wine and flight. Luckily, one of the most renowned minds in wine flies with us; meet Doug Frost.

United's Master Sommelier, Doug Frost

As both a Master Sommelier and Master of Wine, one of only four people to hold both distinctions, Doug is on another plane when it comes to the grape stuff. Since partnering with United in 2005, he has been tasting tirelessly to ensure the wines onboard pair perfectly with any flight. In fact, he tries as many as 10,000 different bottles every year to find the perfect labels for United's passengers to choose from. That might sound like a paradise to some, but choosing the right wine for the friendly skies is no easy feat. As Doug explains, "No one can really say what somebody else's taste is. We like different things because our experiences and our palates are different."

Aside from varying individual experiences, our taste buds are also affected by cabin dryness and pressure—a factor Doug has to account for when making his selections. One of the wines he's chosen for the past two years is Colby Red.

"What appealed to me about the Colby Red was that it was very consistent. It was lush, friendly and still carried enough structure that it wasn't soft. I felt like it pushed a lot of the right buttons."

Aside from being a great bottle, the wine's story is inspiring on its own. At 10 years old, co-founder Colby Groom had to undergo multiple surgeries to repair his heart. Afterwards, he and his father, Daryl, launched the wine label to raise money for heart research in hopes that no kid would ever have to go through the same. So far, they've raised over $1,000,000 for the cause.

Doug explained how much it means to support their initiative: "Being able to help Colby, Daryl, and their family support research to prevent something like that from happening, or even help provide understanding, that's just as cool as it gets."

During our conversation, Doug mentioned how the emotional connection we have with a wine influences how we taste it. Well, it doesn't get much more emotional than that.

Salud, Doug.

United cargo-only flights transport critical goods

When the pandemic began, United Cargo knew it would be critical to utilize its fleet, network and industry-leading pharmaceutical handling processes to transport a COVID-19 vaccine when the time came.

Connecting vaccines to the world: United responds to mass distribution effort

December 22, 2020

On November 27, United Airlines became the first commercial airline to safely deliver the first batch of Pfizer and BioNTech's COVID-19 vaccine into the U.S. thanks to a coordinated effort between United's cargo, safety, technical operations, flight operations, regulatory and legal teams.

Now as the entire shipping and logistics industry bands together to widely distribute vaccines, United is leveraging all of its flights, including cargo-only and those carrying passengers, to transport millions of vaccines to destinations throughout our network, including Honolulu, Guam and Saipan – the first of any carrier to do so.

Why we fly

By The Hub team, November 27, 2020

In October 2019, we launched a first-of-its-kind airline miles donation platform, Miles on a Mission. In the inaugural year, MileagePlus members donated over 70 million miles, with United matching over 20 million miles, to 51 organizations. These miles have allowed for these organizations to do important, life-changing, life-saving work in the communities we serve around the globe.
